Here is a chart of the angles I typically associate with configurations of finger and hand widths at the end of an extended arm. Note that 1 degree at a mile is equivalent to seeing a 100 ft high object, such as a lighthouse.
Range (miles)= size (feet)/(100 (feet) * angular size(degrees))
